  • Mateusz Fałkowski (Pilecki-Institut Berlin) - "The Lemkin Center for Documenting Russian War Crimes in Ukraine"

The Center for Urban History, a privately founded academic NGO in Lviv, Ukraine, launched various war documentation projects in the early spring of 2022. The experience of collecting interviews and visual sources "from the inside of the event" builds on the rapid response initiatives during the Euromaidan and COVID-19 pandemic but also has to develop flexible methodologies. During her presentation, Natalia will discuss the institutional trajectories leading to various war-related archiving projects and address the challenges of collecting material and its disclosure.

The Nevzlin Center promotes multidisciplinary research and teaching of Russian and East European Jewish history and heritage at the Hebrew University and at other universities in Israel. The Center also enriches the field by hosting visiting scholars from abroad, promoting scholarly dialogue among faculty, postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students, and providing access to the Hebrew University’s extensive research resources.

The Raphael Lemkin Center for Documenting Russian Crimes in Ukraine has been established by the PIlecki Institute in response to the Russian attack on Ukraine and reports of Russian military actions against civilians. The task of the unit is to collect and preserve evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Russian troops on Ukrainian territory, and especially to collect and record witness testimonies. Its latest special report has been featured in various global news outlets (including BBC4, LBC Radio, Tagesspiegel, Deutschlandradio etc.) and can be downloaded here
