A House Made of Splinters is the only film from Ukraine and about Ukraine that was nominated for the Oscar award in the best documentary category . The premiere took place at the Sundance festival in 2022. This is the second film directed by Simon Lereng Wilmont, which was shot in Ukraine. The filming took place in the Luhansk region. The Voices of Children Charitable Foundation became a partner in the creation of the film.
The director returns to the topic of the long-term consequences of war, and offers a deeper look at the impact of war on the most vulnerable part of society. This is a heartbreaking and poignant picture of the temporary orphan shelter full of care, support and trust to children who desperately need it. The film tells the story of three children - Eva, Sasha and Kolya - who are waiting for their fate to be decided. Meanwhile, the shelter carers give the children moments of joy and peace.
The screening of this film at this very moment is an opportunity to give voice to Ukrainian children. To draw attention to the problems of childhood during the war. And most importantly, to give little Ukrainians a chance for a decent and safe life.
After the film screening will take place a discussion “War through the voices of children” with:
- Azad Safarov, the film director, co-founder of the Voices of Children Charitable Foundation
- Olena Rozvadovska, human rights activist, co-founder of the Voices of Children Charitable Foundation,
- Imke Hansen - vice executive director of the German-Swis organization Libereco
- Yulia Krasilnykova - executive director of the Ukrainian NGO Vostok SOS
Moderator - Eva Yakubovska - curator of the Program “Воля UA”
