During her Artist Talk Yael Vishnizki Levi will discuss her research and film project, ‘Manufaktura’ – an experimental short film, which derives inspiration from the pioneering science-fiction classic “Metropolis” (1927, dir. Fritz Lang). Depicting the unequal social structure in an industrial dystopian city, the factory is portrayed in Metropolis as a monstrous Moloch. In her film, using archival materials, Vishnizki-Levi investigates similar structures of modernist industrial complexes, such as the one in Łódź, Poland where the Manufaktura – a former textile factory that turned into a shopping and recreation center – is located.

Yael Vishnizki-Levi (born 1988) is a visual artist, filmmaker, and researcher. She holds a BFA (cum laude) from Bezalel Academy for Art and Design in Jerusalem. She also studied at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art and at the Tel Aviv University. Currently Yael is completing her MA at the department of Artes Liberales at the University of Warsaw.

Yael exhibits her work internationally including at the BWA Wrocław Główny, Wrocław Contemporary Museum, Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews and more.

In her work, Yael deals with ideas of representation and recreation of historical issues. She is interested in concepts of migration throughout the 20th century as well as in social and artistic movements from Central-Eastern Europe. In her work, Yael uses archival images which allow her to channel personal and collective stories through films, photographs, documents, and letters among other found objects. By incorporating different materials into her films and installations, Yael attempts to create an interactive, multidisciplinary art form and build bridges between the past, present and future.
