Could southern and eastern Ukraine be described as a laboratory of modernity? What would the implications of such an approach be for late Imperial Russia and the early Soviet Union? How did the city of Katerynoslav-Dnipropetrovsk (now Dnipro) cope with the challenges of rapid industrialization, immigration, and ethno-religious diversity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries? In what ways could the analytical notions of colonialism, hybridity, and national indifference be helpful when applied to Ukrainian socioeconomic realities in the modern era? Based on my experience writing the first English-language biography of Dnipro, “Dnipro: An Entangled History of a European City” (Boston, 2022), I would like to reflect on these topics and discuss the book’s main points.
